General Information for Active-Duty Selectees
You will be a fully integrated and active member of the midshipman Battalion, which has many different requirements
in addition to attendance at drill laboratory:
- Platoons rotate duty weeks, which involve evening study hall watches and performing morning and evening colors.
Each platoon will wind up with 3 or 4 duty weeks in a semester. The study hall watches have a 1600-1900 watch and a
1900-2200 watch, and are posted Sunday through Thursday.
- The Battalion conducts fund raising for Battalion functions by requiring members to work for the University's Parking
and Transportation department at University events. These duties involve directing traffic and collecting money at the
parking lots around the University. These shifts are anywhere from 4 to 8 hours long and can occur on the weekdays or
Saturday. Battalion members are required to park twice in a semester.
- There is a drill competition among the platoons, which requires marching practice. These practices occur on weekday
mornings, generally at 0600. Drill practices are typically front loaded to the first half of the semester.
- In addition to labs and the above, there are other miscellaneous events that have required attendance. These are
events such as the Army/Navy flag football game, the Navy Ball, Commissioning ceremonies, and the Change of Command
ceremony for the Battalion. Commissioning and Change of Command occur at the end of every Spring/Fall semester.
- As an NECP/STA-21(N) you have a mandatory membership in the Nuclear Power Club. Dues are required (to avoid having
to do fund raising).
- Practice PFAs are run, along with the semi-annual PFAs. It's important to maintain fitness. The minimum PFA score
for commissioning is a Good Low.
- It is possible that you will hold a battalion billet after your first semester at the University. This will have
specific duties associated with it, and as a result, require an increased time commitment.
- Acceptable clothing is restricted to that allowed to officers in foreign ports. These are mostly common sense
restrictions but are more limiting than what was allowed at NNPTC for civilian attire. Read the SORM (para 1102.c)
provisions for appropriate civilian attire (ACA).
- When reporting to the command, you should wear the uniform of the day. Officer Candidates will wear their OC
uniforms vice their enlisted uniforms for check-in. Contact the unit to determine the appropriate uniform of the day.
- Active-duty members also receive the University of Arizona's residential tuition rate by bringing their
orders to the university's residency department. Arizona residents also get a break on car registration by
filling out the appropriate form in NROTC admin.
DO NOT get rid of your enlisted uniforms once you are here. Until you have gotten your commission,
you will need to keep your enlisted uniforms.
